Andy Savage is researching the Victorian ironfounder, Andrew Handyside of
Derby and London, who owned The Britannia Iron Works, Derby.  His aim is
to get the people of Derby to honour this man, and raise awareness of the
plight of the Great Northern Railway's Friar Gate bridge, built by
Handysides, and the subject of a petition featured previously in Raildate:
http://tinyurl.com/35quwru

Andy has created a world map from the many hundreds of hours of research
to find bridges, fountains, post-boxes and railway stations made by
Andrew Handyside and Company:
http://tinyurl.com/3a8xpkn

He also has a dedicated Andrew Handyside Flickr group where anyone can
contribute photographs of Handyside items:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/1531851@N22/

If you knows of anything built by Handyside (current or demolished) that
has not yet been marked on the map, please let Andy know the exact
location(s).  Instructions for doing so are here:

Lines under construction and proposed
Project Mapping, which has been producing schematic maps of the British
railway system since privatisation, has produced one showing 74 lines
under construction or proposed.  The map is not quite up to date as line
10, Bishop Auckland-Stanhope, opened five months ago.  Nonetheless it's a
useful reference.

Heritage Railways
In Sussex, the Spa Valley Railway signed a lease with Network Rail in
August covering the use of the former Birchden-Eridge down line and into
the down main and down bay platforms at Eridge.  It is hoped to run a
preview service into Eridge later this year with formal opening early in
2011.  In the Cotswolds The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway aims to
open its two-mile northwards extension to Laverton in 2011.

London St Pancras
5th May 2011 has been announced as the opening date for the new 150m 245-
bedroom St Pancras Renaissance Hotel (formerly St Pancras Chambers and
before that the Midland Grand Hotel).

Croydon
The planned 20m refurbishment of East Croydon station includes a new
footbridge that is claimed will relieve overcrowding at the current
entrance.  Croydon Council is contributing 6m as it will also provide an
easier route into the town centre for people living in Addiscombe.

GWR Radstock-Frome
A new scheme was announced in August to build a light rail line between
Radstock and Kilmersdon, eventually providing access the the main line at
Frome.

S&DJR Templecombe-Poole
A second major bridge over the the River Stour has been replaced.  The one
at Fiddleford was opened in 2006 and this has been followed this month by
the one at Stourpaine.  The Stour was bridged four times by the Somerset &
Dorset Junction Railway.

Lincolnshire
The 15-ins gauge Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway (not to be confused with
the similarly named Lincolnshire Coast LR at Skegness) has been put up for
sale with an asking price of 700,000.

works and facing Doncaster station, has been put on the market.

Nottingham
A 60m revamp of Nottingham station starting in July 2012 will include a
complete redesign of platform 4.  It will be followed by the resignalling
of the station area, control of which will transfer to the new East
Midlands Control Centre located at Derby.

South Yorkshire
Durham-based Hargreaves Services PLC has been consistently criticised by
councillors and residents over emissions from its Monckton Coke and
Chemical plant in Royston, near Barnsley.  Now the firm has revealed that
it has set aside 2.7m to deal with environmental issues at the works,
and also said it wants to move much of its transport onto the railways.

East Yorkshire
The Goole-Gilberdyke section of the Doncaster-Hull line is closed until
13th November to allow refurbishment of Goole swing bridge.

Gobowen-Blodwell Quarry
The Cambrian Heritage Railways wants its trains to cross the A483 south of
Oswestry and the A5/A483 to the north, and recently met David Keay, HM
Principal Inspector of Railways.  He said that statutory powers for the
line between Gobowen and Llanyblodwel remain, which would allow its use by
either a heritage railway or for freight.

GWR Bala Jn-Blaenau Ffestiniog
The 6 miles from Trawsfynydd CEGB sidings to Blaenau Ffestiniog didn't
close until 1998, the overgrown track is still in situ and there have been
several attempts to reopen it as a heritage line.  The latest one seems to
be gaining momentum.

HR Aviemore-Forres
There were only five stations on the Highland Railway's 36-mile line
between Aviemore and Forres and Dunphail, the final one located 8 miles
south of Forres, is now in on the market for 249,000.
